This is a SOBERING story (with a happy ending) about Kelliann O’Hare and the MATER (Maternal Addiction Treatment Education & Research) program at Jefferson University (Philadelphia, PA).
Battling her opioid addiction since high-school, Kelliann sought help from MATER when (at age 33), she was abusing while pregnant with her second child.
Not only did Kelliann make it through the MATER program, but she enrolled a second time and ultimately became a Lead Patient Navigator to help guide other women through the program.
“What ends up happening for women that come to our program is that they’re pregnant and they decide, `I want this baby to survive and be healthy and happy. I’m going to do whatever it takes.’ ”
-- Diane Abatemarco, Director of the MATER program at Jefferson University
